C'est en 1974 que la rencontre entre la collection des œuvres de Picasso et l'hôtel Salé, un des plus beaux hôtels particuliers baroques du Marais, est décidée. En 1976, un concours désigne Roland Simounet pour aménager le musée dans l'hôtel historique entièrement restauré. L'architecte doit respecter le caractère historique du bâtiment tout en prévoyant la présentation et la préservation des œuvres, l'accueil des visiteurs. Les éléments décoratifs, lustres, banquettes, chaises, tables, sont spécialement créés pour le musée par Diego Giacometti. Le musée est ouvert au public en 1985.

It was in 1974 that the meeting between Picasso's collection of works and the Hotel Salé, one of the most beautiful baroque hotels in the Marais, was decided. In 1976, a contest designates Roland Simounet to arrange the museum in the historic hotel completely restored. The architect must respect the historical character of the building while providing for the presentation and preservation of the works, the reception of visitors. The decorative elements, chandeliers, benches, chairs, tables, are specially created for the museum by Diego Giacometti. The museum is open to the public in 1985.
